A kaolinite-tetrabutylphosphonium bromide intercalation compound as an effective intermediate for intercalation of bulky organophosphonium salts

A kaolinite-tetrabutylphosphonium bromide (TBPBr) intercalation compound (Kaol-TBPBr) underwent of dodecyltributylphosphonium (C12TriBPBr), while a kaolinite-dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) (Kaol-DMSO) and methoxy-modified kaolinite (MeO-Kaol) showed no such capability. As for the reaction Kaol-TBPBr C12TriBPBr, X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed expansion basal spacing from 1.53 nm to 2.10 nm. Fourier transform infrared, solid-state 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with cross polarization magic angle spinning ( CP/MAS NMR) spectroscopies C/P Br/P molar ratios indicated C12TriBPBr between layers upon removal pre-intercalated TBPBr. concerns reactions Kaol-DMSO XRD exhibited difference as compared that or decrease in 1.12 0.72 pristine kaolinite. With respect MeO-Kaol displayed 0.86 MeO-Kaol. was also used an intermediate successful relatively bulk organophosphonium salts, hexadecyltributylphosphonium bromide, tetradecyltrihexylphosphonium chloride tetraoctylphosphonium bromide. These results clearly reveal versatility effective use chemistry. • Bulky salts were intercalated Tetrabutylphosphonium versatile intermediate. new chemistry is proposed.
